Ruben H Fleet Science Museum

wooden spirals
On a very hot, humid day last week we went to the Resident Free Tuesday at the Ruben H. Fleet Science Museum and the Natural History Museum in Balboa Park in San Diego. It's offered to San Diego city and county residents. See website for details. However, there is a great deal going on in the month of October, kids 12 and under free with a paid adult at many of San Diego's museums and art museums.
Knitted Hyperbolic plane
Currently, there is a Geometry Playground exhibit at the Science Museum. We enjoyed climbing the geometrically shaped play structure, climbing through wooden spiraling tunnels, creating patterns, angles, arcs and shapes throughout the museum.
geometrical shapes
We also enjoyed playing with pendulums, seeing both man-made and natural collections of geometric forms, a hurricane similator (which went up to 80mph) and creating geometic shapes with an interactive light exhibit, (which reminded me of Harold and the Purple Crayon)drawing and creating a world with a light marker!
creating lines with light
Our family had so much fun. We also visited the Natural History Museum while there, which was also free that day. We enjoyed a giant pendulum, the dinosaurs, fossils, & the Polar Exhibit. There is also an exhibit about the Infrastructure of our Water System which we found very informative.

Lots of interesting, fun and interactive exhibits to see at both of the museums. Also, a great place to cool off on a hot and/or humid afternoon with the family.

Have a great week!

Raven Hill Orchard, Julian

Fresh pickin'
It's September! That means time for apple picking here in San Diego. One of our favorite places to pick apples is Raven Hill Orchard in Julian. Just off of Highway 78 and Wynola Road, the orchard has an added treat of some really interesting sculptures by artist and orchard owner Patrick Brady.
'
We enjoyed picking some Gravenstein, which we were told were great for juicing, but we found were just as great to eat right off the tree. We'll be making some pies with some of the ones we picked very soon!
Jona apples
The orchard is open everyday til 5. You purchase a bag for $10 and pick the apples which are ready. It's located at 1284 Julian Orchards Dr, Julian. You take the Wynola Rd turn from the 78.

While there, we stopped by Wynola Pizza Express for some delicious lunch and played on the big rocks out back. There's lots of other great places in the area as well that you might like to check out while there.

Have fun picking!
